The upcoming meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council is set to include a review of the developments in anti-profiteering matters. During this meeting, the Council will receive an update on the performance report of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for the first quarter (April-June) of the current fiscal year 2023-24. Remarkably, the report reveals that no cases were resolved during this period, as disclosed by a source familiar with the agenda.
This marks the inaugural evaluation of anti-profiteering cases following the transition to India’s antitrust regulator on December 1, 2022. This changeover replaced the National Anti-Profiteering Authority (NAA) and was intended to combat unfair profiteering practices among registered suppliers.
As per the forthcoming status report, scheduled for presentation to the Council on October 7, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) received a total of 27 complaints in the first quarter. Out of these, the CCI took on 12 cases related to profiteering, offering necessary guidance and direction. The remaining complaints were associated with other GST matters and were subsequently referred to the respective state and central GST authorities for further action.
