Haryana Government Appoints New VAT Tribunal Members

The Haryana government has taken a significant step in bolstering its administrative infrastructure with the appointment of new members to the Value Added Tax (VAT) Tribunal. In a recent notification dated February 6, 2024, issued under Notification No. 04/19290-ET-4-2023/600, the state government announced the appointment of Justice Harnaresh Singh Gill (Retired) as the Chairman of the VAT Tribunal. Joining him are Smt. Anju Goyal (CA) and Sh. Sachin Jain (Advocate) as Members of the Tribunal.

This move comes as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to streamline the functioning of key regulatory bodies and ensure efficient execution of their respective mandates. The appointment of Justice Gill, a retired judicial officer with a wealth of experience in legal matters, is expected to bring a high level of expertise and leadership to the VAT Tribunal.

The addition of Smt. Anju Goyal, a Chartered Accountant, and Sh. Sachin Jain, an Advocate, as Members further strengthens the composition of the Tribunal, bringing diverse perspectives and professional backgrounds to the table. Their collective knowledge and skillsets will contribute to the effective adjudication of tax-related matters and the resolution of disputes within the VAT framework.

The VAT Tribunal plays a crucial role in the state’s tax administration system, serving as an appellate authority for disputes arising from VAT assessments and other related issues. With the newly appointed Chairman and Members in place, the Tribunal is poised to enhance its capacity to handle a wide range of tax-related cases and deliver timely and fair judgments.

In addition to the restructuring of the VAT Tribunal, the Haryana government is also gearing up for the launch of Goods and Services Tax (GST) Appellate Tribunals. According to Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra, operations for these Tribunals are expected to commence in July or August, marking another milestone in the state’s tax administration framework.

The establishment of GST Appellate Tribunals is aimed at addressing taxpayer-system issues and providing a robust mechanism for the resolution of disputes related to GST implementation. By setting up dedicated appellate bodies, the government aims to ensure transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the administration of the GST regime.

Overall, the appointment of new members to the VAT Tribunal and the impending launch of GST Appellate Tribunals underscore the government’s commitment to strengthening its tax administration infrastructure and enhancing the ease of doing business in the state. These measures are expected to promote confidence among taxpayers, facilitate smoother tax compliance, and contribute to the overall economic growth and development of Haryana.
